Racers Defeat Belmont, Earn Second Straight OVC Victory

Coming off a dominant performance in a 7-0 victory over Tennessee State in the conference opener, Murray State women's tennis kept the momentum going with a 6-1 triumph on the road against Belmont on Sunday afternoon.

Beginning with doubles, Anja Loncarevic and Stasya teamed up to earn a 6-4 victory, while the duo of Amina Hadzic and Sara Loncarevic prevailed 7-5.

"The girls did a great job adapting to playing indoors today," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano. "During the doubles, all the matches were very close until the end, and I am very proud of them for finding a way to win the doubles point."

"Amina and Sara saved one match point in their doubles and came back to clinch for us, which gave us a lot of confidence going into singles," added Caetano.

In singles, the Racers turned in another impressive effort in which they took five of the six matches on the afternoon.

Claire Chang (6-1, 6-2), Stasya Sharapova (5-7, 6-2, 6-2), Amina Hadzic (4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5), Aarja Chakraborty (6-1 6-3), and Sara Loncarevic (2-6, 6-2, 10-6) found success in their respective matches to account for the five singles points on the day.

"The team as a whole did an amazing job in singles as well. Our energy was super high, and we fought for every point. We never gave up when things were tough, which is exactly what Racer tennis is about," said Caetano.

"Sara, Amina and Stasya did an amazing job finding a way to come back after losing their first sets. They played very consistent under pressure."

"I also couldn't be more proud of the way Anja competed for us today, forcing a third set and giving the rest of the team the time to clinch the match for us. Claire played a great match, dominating her opponent from start to finish, and it was also great to see Aarja clinching the match for us - playing with confidence and raising her game in the important moments," concluded Caetano.

The Racers return to action on Saturday, as they wrap up their three-game OVC road trip against Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Alabama.
