Drewell Earns NCAA Elite 90 Award
3/7/2019 8:38:00 PM | Rifle
Meike Drewell, a junior at Murray State University, has been named as the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2019 NCAA National Rifle Championship.
Drewell, a business administration major, currently carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was presented with the award during the national championship banquet on Thursday evening in Morgantown, West Virginia. Drewell, joins former teammate Ivan Roe as the only Racers to win the prestigious award in any sport.
"Meike has worked hard to have success in both the classroom and on the range," said head coach Alan Lollar. "She is a great example of the standard we aspire to."
Director of Athletics Kevin Saal echoed Lollar's sentiments. "While we certainly want our student-athletes to compete for championships, we also want them to excel in the classroom and Meike is proof that you can do both. We are so incredibly proud of her and what she accomplished and to now have two Elite 90 winners in recent history is a shining example of what we strive for in our program."
First presented during the 2009-2010 season, the Elite 90 is an award founded by the NCAA, which recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
