Racers Earn Third Consecutive Victory in Win Over SIUE
4/13/2019 5:38:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Murray State women's tennis paid a visit to Edwardsville, Illinois to take on the Cougars of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in an Ohio Valley Conference match on Friday afternoon. The Racers began by earning the doubles point, and would later go on to win four of the six singles matches to secure a 5-2 victory on the day. The triumph would be the third consecutive victory for the Racers as they improve to 5-1 against OVC competition on the year.
Â
In doubles, the team of Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson prevailed 6-1 in the No. 2 slot for the Racers, while the duo of Amina Hadzic and Sara Loncarevic improved to 5-1 in the OVC with a 7-6 win in the no. 3 doubles position for Murray State.
Â
In singles, Stasya Sharapova (4-6, 6-2, 7-5), Amina Hadzic (6-4, 7-5), Aarja Chakraborty (6-2, 7-6), and Sara Loncarevic (6-2, 6-3) won their respective matches to lift the Racers over the Cougars.
Â
Chakraborty and Hadzic would remain perfect against OVC competition in singles play, as they both improve to 6-0 at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions for the Racers.
Â
"All the matches in the OVC this year are very close and it was no different today. We played in some windy conditions, which makes things even tougher, so I am very proud of the girls for finding a way to get another win," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano.
Â
"We started the match really well in doubles, and it felt great to get the doubles point and go to singles with a little less pressure on our shoulders."
Â
"In singles, all of the matches were close and, given the conditions, I think we played a good match overall. We were smart, understanding how to play with the wind blowing very hard at times, and we did an excellent job in the big moments of the match. We know we have another tough one on Saturday, and we will be ready to battle again," concluded Caetano.
The Racers return to action with another OVC match on Saturday - a meeting with the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University on the road in Charleston.
