Holmslykke Becomes First MSU & OVC Player To Advance To NCAA Golf Finals
5/8/2019 4:08:00 PM | Women's Golf
Murray State's Linette Holmslykke became the first player in program and Ohio Valley Conference history to advance past the regional level to the NCAA
Women's Golf Championship finals on Wednesday when she carded a 1-under-par 71 to become one of three individuals to advance. At the Saughahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Alabama, the Racers were seeded 18th at the start of the event as three-time OVC champions and finished 17th.
Â
Holmslykke, a senior from Vejle, Denmark, will represent Murray State and the OVC at the NCAA Finals at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas (May 17-20).
Â
Riding the wave of her 7-under-par 65 in round two, Holmslykke crafted a methodical 71 in the final round including eight-straight pars to finish. Her scores of 75-65-71=211 set the MSU and OVC record in the NCAAs as she joined Maryland's Virunpat Olankitkunchai (70-70-73=213) and Alabama's
Angelica Moresco (75-70-70=215) as the three individuals to advance to the NCAA finals. The three individuals were determined from those players that were not on the top-6 teams that advanced to the finals.
Â
Vanderbilt's Auston Kim was the medalist on scores of 70-70-70=210, one shot better than Holmslykke.
Â
When the dust settled on three days of warm weather on a firm and fast Saghahatchee course, the Racers posted scores of 312-298-306=916 to place 17th, one spot better than they were seeded. The Racers were one shot better than Albany (917) and six shots behind 16th place South Alabama (910). Vanderbilt won the event with a total score of 860, while Florida State (863), Duke (868), Virginia (873), host Auburn (874) and Tennessee (876) all advanced to the NCAA finals. Maryland (879), East Carolina (881), Furman (886) and Alabama (895) made up the teams that were in the hunt to advance, but fell short.
Â
For the Racers to reach an NCAA regional for a third-straight season, the team that got them here to Auburn played hard throughout the 54 hole event. After Holmslykke's runner-up finish, Jane Watts and Sarah McDowell shared 84th place. Watts, a senior, had scores of 80-75-80=235, while the freshman McDowell carded scores of 78-79-78=235. Senior Anna Moore was 87th on scores of 79-80-78=237 and Raeysha Surendran placed 89th on scores of 80-79-79=238.
