Big Sixth Inning Lifts Governors Past Racers at OVC Tournament
5/9/2019 11:45:00 PM | Softball
After inclement weather delayed the first pitch more than six hours, the Racers would meet the Governors of Austin Peay on the second day of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday evening. In a must-win game in the double-elimination tournament, Murray State fell to the Governors despite allowing just three hits. 3-0 would be the final score from Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
The Racers put a runner in scoring position in the second inning when a two-out single from Lindsey Carroll moved Jensen Striegel to third, but Murray State could not generate the first run of the ballgame as the contest remained scoreless through the end of the second frame.
Murray State would see another promising opportunity in the fourth when Madison Culver laced a one-out double to right center, but the Racer scoring effort would once again come up short as the competition still searched for its first run after four innings of action.
In what became a fierce duel in the circle, Taylor Makowsky allowed just one hit through the first five innings for Murray State before the Governors ended the scoring drought in the sixth.
A run-scoring double from Brooke Pfefferle followed by a triple from Kacy Acree accounted for a pair of scores, while a one-out ground ball from Danielle Liermann capped a three-run sixth for Austin Peay.
With the Racers facing a three-run deficit with just three outs to work with, they were unable to produce runs in the final frame – falling to the Governors by a score of 3-0.
Taylor Makowsky tossed five innings, surrendering three earned runs while striking out a pair, while Amber Van Duyse dealt a scoreless frame in relief as the Racer pitching staff allowed just three hits in the defeat.
At the dish, Madison Culver collected two hits with a double to lead the Racer offense.
After a 16-6 OVC record marked the second-best conference finish in program history, the Racers finish at 26-27 overall after enduring a heartbreaking defeat on day two of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
