Heroes Of San Jose - Hoopalooza Recalls Racer Glory From 2010
8/2/2019 10:40:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The fifth staging of Racer Hoopalooza was held at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky Friday as the event that started in 2013, keeps getting better. This edition of Racer Hoopalooza was an impressive gathering of many Racer Basketball greats, both players and coaches.
In 2019, the special focus was the team coached by Billy Kennedy from the 2009-10 season. That team is forever remembered in Racer lore for their record 31 wins and one of the most memorable upsets in NCAA Tournament history when the Racers beat Vanderbilt in San Jose. With MSU basketball just completing another outstanding decade, the night was a celebration one of the greatest teams in Murray State history which will be 10 years old in March.
The evening feature guest speakers, Coach Billy Kennedy, who led the Racers six seasons (2006-11) and won a pair of OVC regular season titles and one OVC Tournament title. Former Players Isaiah Canaan, Tony Easley and Danero Thomas also spoke to the large crowd. Canaan is the fifth-leading scorer at MSU, has his No. 3 retired and he is a MSU Hall of Famer. Easley set the single-season record with 95 blocked shots in the 2009-10 season and Thomas reached 1,000 points in his MSU career and is famous for hitting the buzzer shot that beat Vandy.
Racer Hoopalooza was first held in 2013 when former coach Steve Prohm (now at Iowa State) brought the idea to life. Coach Prohm had a vision to create a reunion event that would spotlight the championship tradition at Murray State, the elite players and coaches that have passed through, and the amazing fan base we call 'Racer Nation'. Six years later, Racer Hoopalooza is still a great event. The next Hoopalooza is in August of 2021.
Saturday brings day two of Racer Hoopalooza with a golf scramble in the morning at Murray Country Club and afternoon pick-up basketball games at the CFSB Center.
