Bears Squeak By Racers on the Road in Springfield

Murray State women's soccer concluded the non-conference portion of the 2019 schedule on Sunday when they traveled to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State. Despite allowing just one shot on goal, the Racers fell to the Bears – 1-0 would be the final score from Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
The Bears opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Olina Einarsdottir found the back of the net to give Missouri State a 1-0 lead.
The Missouri State goal would be the only shot on target for either team through the first half of action as both defenses were effective in cutting out the attack through the first 45 minutes of play.
The Racers began to generate some attacking opportunities early in the second half, however, as Miyah Watford broke free from the last defender and sent a shot over the crossbar just minutes after the halftime break.
Just inside the final 25 minutes of the match, Murray State would once again see a promising attacking run when Elizabeth Tilton headed a ball in behind the back line for Watford, but the ensuing shot missed just over the bar once more as the Racers were unable to make a dent in the score line.
The Racers were awarded two free kicks in the attacking third in the late stages of the match, but could not capitalize on the opportunities as a strong Missouri State defensive effort held off the Racer attack in the closing moments.
The Racers outshot their opponent 7-3 overall while landing three on target to Missouri State's one, but in the end the Racers would come up short on the road – falling to the Bears by a score of 1-0. Sunday's defeat marks the first time the Racers have been shutout through eight games in 2019.
Senior Miyah Watford led the Racers with four shots on the day, while Joselle Morche was responsible for two of the three Murray State shots on target.
The Racers will be back in action on Sunday when they host SIUE in their Ohio Valley Conference opener at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
