Racers Struggle With Skyhawks in OVC Opener

The Murray State women's basketball team had few answers for UT Martin in the OVC opener for both teams Thursday night at the CFSB Center in Murray, as the Skyhawks cruised to a 89-64 win over the Racers.

UT Martin controlled the ball from the opening tip and used a 16-3 run early in the game to all but put away Murray State in the first quarter. The Skyhawks score five 3-pointers on the opening stanza alone, while limiting the Racers to just seven for the entire game. Murray State was also outrebounded in the game, 48-38, and gave up a combine 48 points off turnovers and on second chances.

Laci Hawthorne scored a career-high 20 points in the game to lead all scorers, while also pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Macie Gibson followed Hawthorne with eight, while Macey Turley had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Racers will need a quick turnaround as they return to action at the CFSB Center Saturday night against Southeast Missouri at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
