Young nets double-double in debut, as Racers out-rebound ‘Cats
The Murray State women's basketball team impressed in its 2020-21 debut Wednesday, despite falling to 11th-ranked Kentucky, 86-60, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. Freshman Katelyn Young pulled down a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds in her collegiate debut, while the Racers crashed the boards on the Wildcats to win the rebounding battle, 48-43.
Early on, the Racers were able to disrupt UK causing two missed shots and drawing three fouls in the first 1:07 of the contest. However, the Wildcats then proved why they are a Final Four contender, shooting 64.7-percent from the field in the opening stanza and never looking back. Chasity Patterson led the way for Kentucky with a game-high 30 points, including a 12-for-13 performance at the free throw line, to go along with eight steals, six rebounds and three assists.
Murray State shot a respectable 36.9-percent from the floor in the game, but ran into big trouble at the free throw line, where they went just 7-for-17. The Racers' win in the rebounding column came not just from Young, who pulled down seven of her 14 boards in the fourth quarter alone, but also from freshman Manna Mensah and senior Laci Hawthorne who had nine and seven, respectively. Young's 14 points also led MSU in scoring, while Hawthorne had nine and Mensah and junior Lex Mayes had eight points each.
The Racers will have nearly a week off before returning to action Tuesday, Dec. 1 when they host Evansville on their home opener at the CFSB Center in Murray.
