Racers Drop Close Contest to Northern Kentucky at Coach B Classic
2/28/2020 9:51:00 PM | Softball
Murray State softball met Northern Kentucky on day one of the Coach B Classic on Friday evening. While both sides tallied seven hits apiece, the Norse would be the team that claimed the advantage on the scoreboard - defeating the Racers 3-1 at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.
It would be Jenna Veber for Murray State against Northern Kentucky's Taylor Ginther in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, as both would go on to take care of business in the circle early on – keeping the game scoreless until the third frame.
That first score would belong to the Norse, who plated the game's first run when Tatum Biddle scored from third on a ground ball hit to second base off the bat of Jordan Jenkins to give NKU a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
As both pitchers continued to cruise in the circle, the score remained unchanged until the home half of the fifth when Murray State knotted the game at 1-1 courtesy of an RBI double from Logan Braundmeier. The extra-base hit scored Jensen Striegel after Striegel reached with a two-out single and later stole second to move into scoring position.
With the game tied at 1-1 through five complete, the Norse reclaimed the lead in their next opportunity when Ava Lawson homered with one out to give her side a 2-1 advantage in the sixth.
The Racers found themselves in a good position in the ensuing half inning, loading the bases with just one out, but saw the momentum come to a screeching halt when an inning-ending double play on the base paths brought the frame to a close.
Northern Kentucky would tack on one more insurance run in the seventh, and the Racers dropped their first game of the Coach B Classic 3-1 in their lone contest on Friday evening.
Veber (2-3) struck out three over six innings before Hannah James tossed a scoreless seventh frame for Murray State in the loss.
At the plate, Logan Braundmeier (2-3, RBI, 2B) would be responsible for driving in the lone Racer run, while Abby Shoulders (2-2, BB) also turned in a two-hit performance, reaching base three times on the evening.
The Racers will return to action on Saturday when they take on Creighton on day two of the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Illinois. First pitch is slated for 4:45 p.m.
