Racers Sharp in Every Facet, Cruise to Victory Over Creighton
2/29/2020 10:50:00 PM | Softball
Murray State softball clashed with Creighton in its lone Saturday contest on day two of the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Illinois. Sierra Gilmore and Lexi Jones launched home runs, while Hannah James tossed a complete game in the circle, as the Racers defeated the Bluejays 10-2 in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
After Logan Braundmeier and Lindsey Carroll singled to open the game, Sierra Gilmore sent her fifth home run of the year soaring over the wall in left as the three-run shot gave Murray State a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.
With Hannah James starting in the circle for Murray State, the sophomore from Nicholasville, Kentucky retired the first six Creighton batters in order, four by way of strikeout, before the Racer offense got back to work in the third.
After her home run in the first, Gilmore would be responsible for another Racer run when she drove in Lindsey Carroll via an RBI double to center field. A sacrifice fly from Alie Kennedy later in the inning would bring Gilmore in to score as the Racers held a 5-0 lead after a two-run third frame.
With two outs and the bases loaded in Murray State's next opportunity, the Racers took complete control when Lexi Jones added four more with one swing of the bat – crushing a grand slam to left field and extending the Racer lead to 9-0 through visiting half of the fourth. With the base-clearing blast, Jones, a senior from Eldersburg, Maryland, became the first Murray State player to hit four career grand slams.
The Bluejays got two back in the home half of the fourth, courtesy of a two-run home run from Mikaela Pechar, but that would serve as the only Creighton scoring on the evening.
The Racers tacked on one final run in the seventh when Lily Fischer scored from third on an error by the Creighton second baseman, before James capped her complete game performance with three more strikeouts in the bottom half as Murray State cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Bluejays.
James improved to 5-2 in 2020 with Saturday's win, allowing just three hits while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in the victory.
At the plate, Lindsey Carroll (3-5, 2B, 2 R) led the way with three hits, while Logan Braundmeier (2-4, 2 R, BB) and Sierra Gilmore (2-4, HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R) each turned in two-hit performances as the Racer offense exploded for 11 total hits in the ballgame. Jones also tallied four RBI courtesy of the grand slam, as her and Gilmore bring their home run totals to five on the season.
The Racers will return to action on Sunday for games against Purdue Fort Wayne and Southern Illinois. First pitch against the Mastodons is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. while the final game of the weekend against the host Salukis is set for 4:45 p.m.
