The Murray State women's basketball team was never really out of Thursday's game at Belmont, but could never turn the corner either and fell to the Bruins, 70-53 at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.

The Racers led for most of the first quarter but a three by Belmont's Elle Harmeyer at the end of the period gave Belmont a lead which they never relinquished. The Racers kept pace with Belmont for most of the second half, but it was their 17.6-percent shooting in the second quarter, that allowed the Bruins to build a hump the Racers could never get over.

Macie Gibson was a career-best 5-for-8 from 3-point range in the game to lead the Racers with 17 points, while Alexis Burpo was one board away from a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Macey Turley rounded out the Racers in double-digits on the afternoon with 10.

The Racers return to action in Nashville Saturday when they take on Tennessee State at the Gentry Complex at 5:30 p.m.
