Drewell Repeats As NCAA Elite 90 Winner
3/15/2020 11:10:00 AM | Rifle
Murray State senior Meike Drewell has been named as the Elite 90 winner for the 2020 NCAA National Rifle Championships. Drewell's win marks the second consecutive year she has won the award and the fourth overall win by a Murray State student-athlete. Of the 319 individual winners of the award, Drewell is just the 50th individual to earn the honor on more than one occasion.
Drewell, a business administration major, currently carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was presented with the award during the national championship awards ceremony Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky. Drewell is one of three Racers all-time to win the award along with rifle's Ivan Roe in 2016 and women's golf's Lynette Holmslykke last season. To date, Murray State is the only OVC member to have had a student-athlete win the award.
"Meike has worked hard to have success in both the classroom and on the range," said head coach Alan Lollar. "She is a great example of the standard we aspire to and will be an example of for our student-athletes for years to come."
Director of Athletics Kevin Saal echoed Lollar's sentiments. "While we certainly want our student-athletes to compete for championships, we also want them to excel in the classroom and Meike is proof that you can do both. We are so incredibly proud of her and what she accomplished and for her to be our program's first two-time winner is shining example of doing things 'The Murray State Way'."
First presented during the 2009-2010 season, the Elite 90 is an award founded by the NCAA, which recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
