Racer Rewind - Ashley Hayes Sets Scoring Mark In 2009

In the long history of women's basketball at Murray State, Ashley N. Hayes remains as one of the best to wear the blue and gold.

One of the best moments for this MSU hall of famer, happened on the night of Feb. 4, 2009 when she set the single-game scoring mark for the Racers with 46 points at Tennessee State. She topped the previous mark of 43 points by Joi Scott, also at TSU, in 2006.

The big day for the Hayes helped the Racers win the game 97-93 while she hit 14-of-24 from the field (7-of-11 from 3-point) and 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Hayes added 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. As she was on her way to becoming the OVC Player of the Year in back-to-back
seasons, Hayes scored 22.6 points per game and averaged 9.5 rebounds.

Hayes, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee, was a guest on episode 77 of the Runnin' with the Racers Podcast on Feb. 12.

"I just went out and played to win," Hayes said. "It was never really about the points, it was about going out and doing what I had to do for us to win. I got to the point where if a defender made just the smallest mistake, I'd take advantage of that. But, I didn't score those points to have no one ever beat me. I want the program to keep getting better and keep that tradition going of great players."

Hayes said she was very happy to see her 2,007 points (second at MSU) topped, when Ke'Shunan James ended her career with 2,191 points in 2018.

Recruited by Joi Williams, Hayes also played for Coach Jody Adams and Coach Rob Cross. Hayes was a big part of the greatest period of Racer women's basketball. The Racers won an OVC Tournament championship and regular season title in 2008 and 2009. Hayes and the Racers won 47 times in her junior and senior seasons. In her final season, Hayes was named to the Naismith Trophy Top-50 Watch List and was a finalist for the State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team.
