GoRacers.com is now into the fourth part of an in-depth look at one of the most impressive sport performances in the history of Murray State and the Ohio
Valley Conference. It's the Murray State women's golf team and head coach Velvet Milkman and their 12 OVC championships since the first in 1997.
Â
Check GoRacers.com for a chronological review of the Racers' 12 titles on Mondays and Fridays.
Â
The 1999 OVC women's golf tournament marked the first of three three-peats for Coach Velvet Milkman when the Racers won the event on home turf at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray. The Racers get the chance to go for four in a row in 2021 after recent OVC titles in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 OVC Tournament was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Â
In the 1999 championship, the Racers won the event with a score of 977, which produced a winning margin of 20 shots over second place Tennessee Tech at 997. Eastern Kentucky was third at 1,013 and Eastern Illinois (1,119) and Austin Peay (1,160) rounded out the field.
Â
MSU's Jenny Daag won back-to-back OVC Player of the Year titles and won medalist at the OVC Tournament on scores of 86-73-79=238. Jessica Widman placed second on rounds of 86-79-75=240, while Megan Reese gave the Racers three players in the top-5 with a fourth place finish on scores of 89-80-81=250. Kristin Margherio was sixth on rounds of 90-80-82=252 and Tina Marshall placed 18th on scores of 94-86-86=266.
Â
"The team was excited to play the championship at home at Miller Golf Course," said Coach Velvet Milkman who was named OVC Coach of the Year. "Thinking back, there was added pressure to play at home and also try for three wins in a row. We also had two new players that were playing in their first OVC Tournament."
Â
"We had some very difficult weather on the first two days, but they persevered and played very well, especially on day two and three. Our veterans, Daag and Widman, were great and our freshman, Rees and Margherio did a great job all year providing lineup depth. They certainly helped fill the void of the losing Brandi Stevenson and Mikki McLeary from the 1998 championship team. The 1999 OVC championship win was special; because it was the only time, we won it on our home course. So that meant a lot of support locally throughout the week, so it was nice to win in front of our fans."
Â
They Racers have won 12 OVC championships and finished runner-up five times in 26 tries. MSU's OVC championships have come in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Racers have only finished out of the top three only three times.
