Â
Out of small town Hoyleton, Ill., just east of St. Louis, Kirk Rueter was recruited by Murray State legendary coach Johnny Reagan and arrived as a freshman in the fall of 1989. By the time he was through with his junior season in 1991, Rueter was the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of Year as the Breds' won the OVC regular season championship. He still owns the school record for wins in a season with 11, tied by Daniel Calhoun in 2009. Rueter's big season in 1991 featured eight complete games.
Â
Drafted by the Montreal Expos, Rueter debuted less than three years later in the big leagues in 1993 where he won his first eight games. In his first MLB game, many family and friends made their way to Montreal's Olympic Stadium to watch Rueter pitch and they saw
something special. He was 22 years old at the time and only two years and one month after his last game for MSU, which was in the 1991 OVC Tournament at Reagan Field. A crowd of 13,593 watched Rueter pitch eight and a 1/3 innings with only two hits and three walks given, while he didn't allow a run. Rueter had five strikeouts that day and some came against the Giants' biggest stars including Will Clark, Barry Bonds and Willie McGee.
Â
While still playing in Montreal, Rueter was on the team that was in first place when the player's strike halted the game and the season in 1994.
Â
That first season in Montreal started a 13-year major league baseball career for Kirk Rueter. His big break came when he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. Rueter played 10 seasons in San Francisco, which meant pitching in six
postseason games including the 2002 world series.
Â
When he retired in 2005, Rueter was the Giants' all-time winning lefty. A mark surpassed recently by Madison Bumgarner. Nearly 2,000 innings pitched and 130 wins, Rueter is rated today as the 176th rated pitcher in MLB history by baseball-reference.com with a .586 winning percentage (among the top-50 left-handers of all-time).
Â
On the podcast, Rueter tells us how close he came from going to spring training with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006 and how he got that awesome nickname, Woody.
