The Murray State Racers went into the 2017 season coming off three straight OVC regular season titles and two trips to the NCAA tournament in three years. The previous year saw the Racers win their first ever set in the NCAA tournament, taking the opening set, 25-21, against the UCLA Bruins.
Following the graduation of the most-decorated class in program history, Murray State was predicted to finish fourth in the OVC Preseason Poll. Belmont, who finished fourth previous year, was picked as the preseason favorite. The Racers came into the mid-season conference matchup against the Bruins, 13-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play while Belmont was 11-10 overall and 6-4 in conference.
The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 set lead, taking the first two by scores of 19-25 and 23-25. Murray State cruised to a 25-15 victory in the third set. The fourth set saw the Racers defend three match points finally winning 30-28, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth and final frame, the Racers and the Bruins knotted the score five times before Murray State had an 8-6 advantage at the switch. After the switch, Belmont went on a 6-1 run to lead 12-9 which the Racers then closed to 12-11. Belmont had service errors leading 14-13 and 15-14 in that final set which the Racers took advantage of to take victory 17-15.
Rachel Guistino led Murray State with 14 kills and 23 digs. Becca Fernandez also notched 23 digs in the victory. Ashley McBee led the Racers with 20 assists and had her third consecutive double-double as she tallied 11 digs. Callie Anderton had 17 assists.
The Racers ended their 2017 season 22-9 overall as they earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament after going 12-4 in OVC play. MSU scored 3-1 victories over Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois to get to the championship match before losing 3-2 to Austin Peay in the OVC Championship.
