The Game
The Murray State football team returns home Saturday for the first of its final two home games of the 2021 season. The Racers welcome Tennessee Tech to The Track Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Series At A Glance
Saturday will be a continuation of the longest series in Murray State history, as the Racers and the Golden Eagles will meet for the 87th time. Tennessee Tech currently leads the all-time series overall at 46-39-1, while the Racers lead in Murray, 22-19.
Scouting The Golden Eagles
Coming off of a win over Virginia-Lynchburg two weeks ago, Tennessee Tech is now 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in OVC play.
Tennessee Tech is currently averaging 19.0 points per game on the year with 137.0 rushing yards and 287.1 passing yards for a total of 287.1 yards per game. Conversely, the Golden Eagle defense is allowing 18.3 points and 338.7 yards per game with 182.3 allowed on the ground and 156.3 allowed in the air.
Willie Miller has spent the most time at quarterback for TTU this season where has completed 40 passes on 89 attempts for 494 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. David Gist currently leads the running attack for the Golden Eagles with 697 yards on 129 carries with six touchdowns. Receiving wise, Quinton Cross leads the way with 399 yards on 32 catches and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Josh Reliford and Seth Carlisle are averaging 6.9 and 6.0 tackles per game, respectively. In addition, Devin Squires currently has team-highs in tackles-for-loss at 8.5 and sacks at 2.5, while Nyquan Washington leads TTU in pass breakups at seven.
A Win Saturday Would...
A win Saturday would put an end to a two-game overall losing streak by Murray State and five-game OVC losing streak, dating back to last season.
Hot Tag
When Preston Rice entered last Saturday's game at Tennessee State in the second half, he came in like a house on fire. Prior to an unsuccessful final drive, Rice was 5-for-9 for 106 yards with a touchdown in addition to 29 yards and a score on three drives, all which resulted in a touchdown.
Save The Date
Murray State is 6-2-1 all-time on Nov. 6. The last time the Racers played on Nov. 6 was in 2010 against Tennessee Tech, a game they won 44-13. That game marked the sixth win in a row for MSU on Nov. 6, the last loss on the date in question came in 1965, a 21-13 defeat at Middle Tennessee.
Need A Sweep
Should the Racers win their final three games of the season, they would post consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2010-11 and on the second since 1999-00. The Racers do have one thing working for them against Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois and that is the fact that Dean Hood is 23-6 against the trio all-time and 5-0 as head coach of the Racers.
There Is No Such Thing As Coincidences...Yes, There Is
