The 1925-26 season under Coach Carlisle Cutchin was the first and now here we are ready for the 2021-22 season, the seventh for Coach Matt McMahon. The 97th season of collegiate basketball for the Murray State Racers is greeted by an enthusiastic return to full capacity at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. Tip time for the Tuesday (Nov. 9) opener is set for 7 p.m.

As one of two remaining original members of the Ohio Valley Conference (Morehead State is the other), the Racers will be playing their 74th season in the league when they host the Southeast Missouri Redhawks (Dec. 30). The Racers seek their 28th OVC regular season championship and 18th OVC Tournament title when the event is played for a fifth-straight season (March 2-5) at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.

The 2021-22 OVC men's basketball poll shows Belmont, Morehead State and Murray State in the top-3 as the season gets underway. It's the first time the Racers haven't been picked first or second since 2011 when they were picked third and then became the national story when they started the season 23-0 under rookie head coach Steve Prohm. The Racers won three OVC titles in a row from 2018-20. Murray State's returning 1,000-point scorers, Tevin Brown and KJ Williams were each named to the All-OVC Preseason Team.

Since their 2014 three-point loss to Houston, the Racers have won six-straight season and home openers. The match up with Cumberland marks the eighth-straight season in which the Racers have opened the season at home since a 2013 defeat at Valparaiso. The Racers have opened the season away from home only twice in the last 13 seasons. The other was a game at California in 2009.

The Racers will play seven games in November including (Nov. 13) when they host Bellarmine on MSU Hall of Fame Day. After three games during Thanksgiving Week (Nov. 22-24) at the Naples (FL) Invitational, The Racers host Campbellsville (Nov. 29).The Racers meet East Tennessee in their first game in Naples and then play Missouri State or Long Beach in game two.
