Racers Thump SIUE – Downtown Tevin Brown hits Seven 3-Pointers
2/20/2021 3:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State Racers (13-10) closed out the 23rd season of collegiate basketball at the CFSB Center Saturday with an 89-62 victory over the SIUE Cougars. The win in Murray, Ky., means the Racers are 10-8 heading into the final week of Ohio Valley Conference play with a chance to get the best seed possible for the OVC Tournament (March 3-6) in Evansville, Ind.
Tevin Brown hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead for Racers in double-figure scoring. Justice Hill scored 14 points, while Devin Gilmore added 12 and Chico Carter, Jr., added 11.
The Racers began the game with a pair of threes from Brown for a 15-8 lead at the first media timeout. The Racers later hit the Cougars with a 13-0 run to take a 34-14 lead with 6:54 left. MSU led 46-21 at the halftime intermission and eventually built a 35-point lead as their largest of the game.
MSU shot 58 percent from the field on 31-of-53 and 50 percent from the 3-point line on 13-of-26. The 13 threes ties a season-high for the Racers as they also made 13 at home against Jacksonville State (Jan. 21). MSU has seven games this season with double-digit made 3-pointers.
With games next week at Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech, the Racers are in a group of teams that will likely make up the fourth, fifth and sixth seeds when the OVC Tournament is played at the Ford Center. JSU is 11-6 and the Racers and Austin Peay are 10-8. Belmont is in first place at 18-0 and Morehead State sits in second at 14-3. Eastern Kentucky is in third place, one game ahead of JSU.
Game Notes
The Racers are now 25-3 all-time against SIUE and 16-0 at home. Since the Cougars joined the OVC in the 2010-11 season, the Racers have won 18-of-20.
The 23rd season is done at the CFSB Center with the Racers posting a record of 9-4. In 23 seasons at The Bank, MSU has lost four or more games in a single season only six times. In 2020-21, the Racers had non-NCAA D-I wins over Greenville and Transylvania and a win over Illinois State. However, the Racers lost close games to Morehead State and Jacksonville State at the start of OVC play. The loss to the Eagles snapped a 25-game winning streak, which was fifth longest in the nation when it ended. Coach Matt McMahon's teams have been hard to beat in the CFSB Center with a six-year mark of 73-15 (.829) overall and 43-10 (.811) in OVC games.
When a Racer gets to seven made 3-pointers, thoughts automatically go to the MSU record book and that of the OVC. The Murray State record is nine in a single game. Tevin Brown was the last to do it in a game at UT Martin (01-10-2019). Jonathan Stark hit nine in an overtime game at South Dakota State (12-17-2016). Justin Burdine was the first Racer to hit nine at home against Eastern Kentucky (02-21-2002). The OVC record is 10 and has been accomplished four times with the latest by Tennessee Tech's Corey Tillery against Warren Wilson College in 2018.
