Murray State falls in straight sets 13-25, 20-25, 26-28 to SIU-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois on Feb. 21.
The Murray State volleyball team lost on the Cougars in First Community Arena, Sunday afternoon, dropping in three sets to SIUE.
Murray State falls to 2-4 in conference play while SIU-Edwardsville improves to 4-2 in the OVC.
The Racers spread out their offense this afternoon, getting nine kills from Jayla Holcombe, eight from Emily Matson and six from Kolby McClelland.
On defensive side, Becca Fernandez picked up 21 digs while Callie Anderton added 13 digs and notched 19 assists.
In the first set, the Racers dug themselves a hole early and fell 13-25.
The Cougars once again took control early and kept their foot on the gas, using a 8-2 run to go up 8-3, then used a 6-2 stretch to take a 17-12 lead. The Racers brought it back to 19-22 before SIUE closed out the second set, 20-25.
The Racers fell behind early in the third set, 8-15 and used a 5-0 stretch to rein the Cougars in, closing the gap to 13-15. MSU and SIUE traded pointed until the Racers used a 3-0 run to tied things up at 22. Murray State had set point at 25-24 to take their first lead of the match but ultimately fell 26-28.
Murray State returns home next weekend, hosting UT-Martin on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 in Racer Arena facing the Skyhawks at 6 p.m. on Sunday and 4 p.m. on Monday.
