Racers Cruise To 15th OVC Championship

Kiuru, Henry take top individual awards as MSU claims 5th title in 6 years
The Murray State rifle team posted an eight-point victory over Morehead State Sunday in air rifle to finish 20 points clear of the Eagles aggregate score and claiming the 2021 OVC Rifle Championship at the Button Rifle Range in Morehead, Kentucky in the process.
The championship marks the 15th overall for the rifle program and its fifth in six year. The MSU rifle team is now the third-winningest in school history with the men's basketball claiming 27 regular-season conference titles, followed by men's tennis with 20.
The Racers shot a 2360 in air rifle to finish with an aggregate of 4676, while the host Eagles fired a 2352 in air rifle to finish at 4676. Jacksonville State finished third with a 2334 air rifle and a 4624 aggregate, while UT Martin was fourth with a 2306 air rifle and a 4563 aggregate.
Individually, Murray State took the top two spots Saturday with Matias Kiuru tying his career high to lead all shooters at 597, followed by Henry, who shot a career-best 593. Dana Buesseler and Anna Scheer were next for MSU at 585, with Scott Patterson rounding out the scores at 578. Kiuru and Henry also finished with top two aggregate scores at 1184 and 1173, respectively, while Buesseler had the fourth best aggregate at 1164.
Following the championship, Kiuru took home both the OVC Smallbore Athlete of the Year and the OVC Air Rifle Athlete of the Year awards, while Henry was named as OVC Freshman of the Year. Kiuru and Henry also earned first-team All-OVC honors on both guns, with Buesseler joining them on the smallbore first team. Buesseler was also named to the air rifle second team, as was Scheer to give the Racers a total of seven all-conference awards. In addition, Henry was named to the All-Newcomer team for both smallbore and air rifle, while Patterson was also named to the air rifle All-Newcomer team.
Murray State returns to action next Sunday for a final tune-up before the annual NCAA qualifier with a neutral site clash against Jacksonville           State in Oxford, Mississippi at the Ole Miss Rifle Range.
