Murray State had a historic day in its home opener against Jacksonville State at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range Saturday morning, winning the match 4736-4672.
The Racers (2-1) had two shooters break or tie individual records, and the team set a program air rifle record with a 2386. Murray State added a 2350 in smallbore.
"I'm really pleased with our team effort, today," head coach Allan Lollar said after the historic performance. "Thank you to everyone that came to the match. Your support is appreciated. It means a lot to us."Â
Carlotta Salafia and Anceline Brackman, who missed the first two matches of the season while representing their countries at the ISSF World Cup in Cairo, both had career days. Salafia broke Murray State's aggregate record with a 1192, shooting 594 in smallbore and 598Â in air rifle. Brackman tied the program air rifle record of 599 with 59 centers and added a 589Â in smallbore for a 1188 aggregate.
"Carlotta and Anceline were solid today," Lollar said. "It's exciting to watch them shoot when they are in a groove."
Murray State controlled all five of the top individual spots, with Caroline Martin finishing in third, shooting a 585 in smallbore, 596 in air rifle and a 1181 aggregate. Ashley Hammond finished in fourth overall and third in smallbore with a 586, and added 593 in air rifle. Lea Soulè rounded out the top five with a 582 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle.Â
The win continues the Racers' run in the series. Murray State swept all three meetings with the Gamecocks last season, and Jacksonville State has not beaten the Racers since January 2023. The Racers, ranked ninth in the CRCA preseason poll, will see Jacksonville State again Nov. 20 in Jacksonville, Ala.
Murray State will return to action Oct. 31, as they had to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State, and full results from Saturday's match can be found on ncaarifle.org.
"Next week, on the road at Ohio State will be a challenge," Lollar said. "It's time to go to work."
