Walker Beck cards the Racers’ lowest score in the final round at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club

The Murray State men's golf team came home from the Don Benbow Invitational with a fourth place showing after a solid final round Tuesday at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida.

In the 36-hole event, the Racers recorded rounds of 312-308=620, just behind Evansville at 612 and host Butler at 609. Drexel claimed a 24-shoty lead on a score of 585.

MSU's Avery Edwards was the Racers' best finisher with a spot in seventh place on scores of 78-74=152, while Connor Coombs placed 13^th on scores of 78-76=154. MSU's first round leader, Quinn Eaton, placed 16^th on scores of 77-79=158. Tyler Powell had scores of 84-84=168 to get a spot in 50^th place. MSU's Walker Beck played the event as an individual placed first among eight solo players and was seventh overall with scores of 79-73=152. His 73 in the final round was MSU's lowest this week.

The field of 10 teams and 58 players tackled the Jacksonville Beach layout that was playing to a par of 71 and 6,750 yards

The next challenge for the Racers is at the Bobby Nichols Collegiate (March 14-16) hosted by Tennessee Tech at Sevierville Golf Club.

About Murray State Men's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 64th season overall and head Coach Eddie Hunt is in his 20th as the second coach in program history. Hunt took over the program in 2001. The founder of the Racer team was Coach Buddy Hewitt in 1959. Hewitt is a Murray State Hall of Famer, inducted in 1990. He was part of the famous Murray State football team that played in the 1948 Tangerine Bowl. The Racers have won Ohio Valley Conference championships four times (1971, 1987, 1991 and 2010). Hewitt won the first three titles and Hunt's team won it in 2010 as their most recent OVC championship. MSU has produced 11 all-time OVC Golfer of the Year winners: Bill Graham (1962, 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Piggot (1971), Chris Carlson (1987), Adam Grogan (1996), Brandon Henson (2001), Nick Newcomb (2010), Cameron Carrico (2011) and Patrick Newcomb (2012, 2013).
