MSU wins the event for the first time since 2017 - Carter & Forsythe on All-Tournament Team

The Murray State women's golf team took home the 19^th Jan Weaver Invitational championship with a hard-fought final round score of 299 at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky. The win marks the Racers' first title in their home event since 2017 and their ninth total in what is annually a strong field of teams.

The Racers posted scores of 305-294-299=898 and bested runner-up Central Arkansas who had scores of 305-293-302=900. Seton Hall placed third at 902 with Bradley (907) and Belmont (910) rounding out the top-5.

Having two players earn a spot on the All-Tournament team put the Racers over the top when Payton Carter and Sarah Forsythe shared fourth place. Carter posted scores of 73-71-79=223, while Forsythe had rounds of 78-73-72=223. Ana Garcia Picchi placed 18^th after scores of 78-77-74=229 and Raeshya Surendran was in 35^th place on a score line of 76-73-85=234. Briana McMinn was in 38^th place, but her final round 74 helped the Racers get the win. Her score line was 80-81-74=235.

MSU had a pair of players in the field as individuals. Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria placed 59^th on scores of 79-83-80=242 and Charli Jo Doss had scores of 77-85-84=246 and placed 68^th.

The rest of the field of 12 teams included Eastern Kentucky (914) in sixth place, Southern Illinois (922), Georgia State (931), Evansville (932) and Dayton (933) made up the top-10. Austin Peay (945) and Tennessee Tech (951).

The course at Miller Memorial played to a par of 72 and at a length of 6,024 yards.

Next up for the Racers is the Ohio Valley Conference Championship (April 18-20) at Hampton Cove Golf Club in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. The Racers have won the last three OVC titles (2017, 2018, 2019). The 2020 event was cancelled because of Covid-19.

About Jan Weaver
Jan Weaver was an avid supporter of Murray State University and the Murray community for many years. Her husband Dick wanted to name the event in her honor. Sadly, the Murray community and Murray State also lost Dick in February 2018. Jan was a longtime teacher and education administrator. She served her students for more than 40 years at the high school and college level. Her tenure at Murray State in the College of Education (1985-97) included serving as dean of the department. Dick and Jan's commitment to Racer Athletics is still helping back up its commitment to Racer student-athletes. They assisted in many ways, but none tops their 1997 accomplishment. Through the Weaver's support, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center. The Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997. The center is still a vital part of helping MSU student-athletes succeed in the classroom. Jan and Dick Weaver were inducted posthumously into the Murray State Hall of Fame to the Hall of Distinction wing in 2018.
