The Racer bats were stymied with only three hits and one run in a pair of losses at University Field
The Murray State Racers softball team ran into a tough day in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader defeat to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks by the scores of 9-1 and 8-0.
Â
The Racers (14-18, 11-5 OVC) try to salvage the final game of the series Saturday in a 1 p.m. start.
Â
After an 11-3 start to OVC play, including a six-game winning streak, the setback at University Field in Jacksonville, Alabama, brings the Racers to the halfway point in the conference race.
Â
Game 1 – Murray State 1, Jacksonville State 9
Racer ace pitcher, Hannah James, was limited to only one inning when JSU hit the MSU junior with five runs on three hits. James (5-7) walked two and had one strikeout. Jenna Veber didn't fare any better as the game was called after five innings. Veber pitched three and 2/3 innings and gave four runs (two earned) on five hits. She did not walk a batter and had one strikeout.
Â
At the plate, the Racers were able to scratch one hit off JSU starter Reagan Watkins. Lily Fischer cracked her third home run of the season in the fourth inning to break up Watkins' bid for a five-inning no-hitter. Â
Â
Game 2 – Murray State 0, Jacksonville State 8
The Racers' bats remained silenced in game two with only two hits, as MSU was shutout for the first time in more than a month by an 8-0 score.
Â
MSU's two hits came from Fischer, a double and Jensen Striegel, a single, in the fourth inning. Â However, they were stranded and the game was again called after five innings.
