Murray State Baseball Officially Welcomes Cooper Goen and Austin Long for 2022
Murray State baseball announced on Friday (Jan. 28) the official coaching staff for the 2022 season with the additions of Cooper Goen and Austin Long. Goen and Long join head coach Dan Skirka as well as assistant coach Tanner Gordon.
Goen joins the Racers as an assistant coach and will primarily coach the catchers, assist with the offense, and oversee on-campus recruiting. Before Murray State, Goen worked with Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Michigan, where he helped earn their best record in five years and placed a catcher on the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.
A native of Austin, Texas, Goen also spent a year at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in a similar role, coaching catchers, hitters, and base runners while serving as the bench coach on game days.
Prior to coaching, he played baseball at Texas Christian University from 2016-19 and was part of two College World Series teams.
Long joins the Racers as a volunteer assistant where he will primarily serve as an outfield coach and serve as bench coach on game days.
Prior to Murray State, Long was the head baseball coach at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 2018-21. While at CCAC, Long led the Wildcats to 2018 and 2019 Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference titles while they also led the league in ERA and Batting Average in 2019. He was named 2018 and 2019 Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year. During his tenure with the Wildcats, over two-dozen players went on to sign with a four-year school.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Long graduated from La Roche University in 2011 where he was a member of the baseball team for two seasons. Before playing at La Roche, Long was a member of the Waynesburg University baseball team for two seasons. Long also holds a full-time position as a Career Services Advisor at South University.
In addition to the new coaching hires, coach Tanner Gordon has been named recruiting coordinator while continuing to serve as the pitching coach for the Racers. During his tenure with the team, Gordon has been a vital piece to the growth of the Racers pitching staff; 2022 will be Gordon's fourth with the Murray State program.
"We are ecstatic to officially announce our 2022 coaching staff," head coach Dan Skirka said. "This staff brings an energy and dedication to this program that is hard to find, and we are certainly happy to have each of them."
The Racers baseball team will hold their first open scrimmages of the spring throughout the weekend (Jan. 29-31) starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and a 2:30 p.m. first pitch on Monday.
