The Series
The Murray State softball team returns to the friendly confines of Racer Field this weekend for a three-game series with Tennessee State. The series begins Friday with a single game at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed live via ESPN+.
All-Time Series At A Glance
In 24 total games, between Murray State and Tennessee State, the Racers have lost just five times and have fallen just twice in Murray, out of 11 games played there. Murray State won last season's series, 2-1, but the Tigers' lone win, and just second in Murray, was epic. TSU squeaked out a 2-1 win in the middle of game of the series in a battle that spanned 16 innings.
Scouting The Tigers
The Tigers are 12-17 overall this season and 3-11 in OVC play. Austin Peay took two out of three games from STU last weekend in Nashville, with the Tigers winning the middle game, 3-1.
Offensively, Tennessee State is currently batting .188 on the season, while their opponents are hitting .283. In the circle, the Tigers have a staff ERA of 4.32, while their opponents have limited them to an ERA of 1.38. In addition, Tiger pitchers dole out 3.81 strikeouts per 7 innings and have a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.7:1.
Individually, Raven Loveless leads the way for the Tigers in the circle with an ERA of 3.41, a 4-11 record, a shutout, 29 strikeouts and 27 walks. At the plate, Peyton Fointno leads TSU with team-highs in batting average at .269, doubles at 8 and RBIs at 16.
A Series Win Would...
A series win would, at the very least, keep the Racers tied with Belmont atop the OVC standings with three weeks remaining.
James Honored Again
Hannah James went 2-0 last week to earn her fourth OVC Pitcher of the Week honor. The junior posted a 1.08 ERA over two complete games at Belmont and did not give up an earned run until the seventh inning of her second game Sunday. She limited opponents to a .196 average on the week, did not allow a single walk over 13.0 innings of work and fanned a total of 18 batters, nine in each game.
A Record Season
On Sunday, Logan Braundmeier set a new Murray State record for doubles in a single season with 21, surpassing the previous record of 19 set by Alexa Becker in 2015. In addition, she is just four way from tying Jacksonville State's Melinda McDonald OVC record of 25 from 2004. Braundmeier is also within striking distance of the Division I record of 29 set by Fresno State's Nina Lindenberg in 1996 and tied by Florida State's Sydney Sherrill in 2018. On top of the Division I record for total doubles, Brandmeier's current doubles per game average of .55 is tied with the record for doubles per game set by Veronica Harris of Chicago State in 1987.
Super Staff
The Murray State pitching staff is currently one of the best in the nation when it comes to earned run average. The Racers allow just 1.67 earned runs per game, which not only leads the OVC, but is the seventh best ERA in the nation. Undefeated Oklahoma currently boasts the country's best staff ERA at a paltry 0.60.
