The Series
The Murray State softball team travels to Nashville Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series between the top two teams in the OVC, the Racers and the Belmont Bruins. Saturday will be a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
All-Time Series At A Glance
The Racers are 18-6 all-time against the Bruins and 5-3 when playing in Nashville. Belmont put an end to a six-game win streak in the series by Murray State last season, when it took the final game of a three-game series in Murray.
Scouting The Bruins
Belmont is currently 18-9 on the season and like Murray State, is 9-2 in the OVC. Like the Racers, the Bruins dropped the front and back ends of a road series last weekend, when they went 1-2 at UT Martin.
Cheynne Cavanaugh leads Belmont offensively this season with a batting average of .409, 13 RBIs, 11 walks and the seventh most stolen base per game in the nation at 0.86 for a total of 22. In the circle, Emma Summer leads the way for the Bruins at 7-4 with nine complete games, a shutout, two saves and 6.6 strikeouts per seven innings. As a team, Belmont currently hits .314 and has an ERA of 3.30, while opponents hit .260 against them.
A Series Win Would...
A series win would give the Racers sole possession of first place in the OVC with four three-game series and a doubleheader left on its conference schedule.
Battle of the Best
This weekend's series will be a battle between the OVC's best offense and its best pitching staff. The Racers currently have the lowest ERA in the league at 1.54, which is the eighth lowest in the nation. Offensively, the Bruins leads the OVC in batting average, hitting an impressive .314 on the year. Conversely, Murray State is hitting at a .288 clip, while the Belmont staff has an ERA of 3.30.
Double Your Fun
Murray State's Logan Braundmeier currently leads all 293 NCAA Division I teams in the total double category with 17. The senior is also third nationally in doubles per game at 0.49.
No Free Passes
Murray State's Hannah James and Belmont's Emma Summers are currently two of the best pitchers in the nation in regards to their strikeout-to-walk ratio. James currently leads the OVC and is ninth nationally at 9.21 strikeouts for every walk, while Summer is second in the league and 12th in the nation at 8.38. Summers is also ninth in Division I in walks per seven innings at 0.76, while Murray State's Jenna Veber is 11th at 0.83 and James is 24th at 0.95.
