Pennington Named Finalist for John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award

Murray State baseball student-athlete Jacob Pennington has been recognized by the College Baseball
Foundation as a finalist for the 2022 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

Pennington, out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is one of five finalists for the award with Devin Ortiz (Virginia), Jordan Hamberg (Coppin State), Cameron Jones (Georgia) and Paul Skenes (Air Force).

Jacob Pennington, a sophomore, made 15 appearances on the mound for the Racers with two starts. He was 3-1 with an ERA of 4.86 in 52.2 innings pitched with 47 strikeouts and only 13 walks. His most impressive outing was at Eastern Illinois (April 22) when he struck out 10. At the plate, Pennington batted in 43 games with an average of .289 with eight home runs, seven doubles and a triple. He drove in 24 runs and had eight stolen bases.

Pennington was the Olerud National Two-Way Player of the Week (April 19) when he helped the Racers sweep UT Martin. He was 4-for-9 at the plate with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base. On the mound, he went three innings with three strikeouts while allowing just one run in the series finale victory for the Racers.

The award is named for John Olerud, the former Washington State University standout who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s and was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. Olerud played 17 years in the big leagues with the Blue Jays, Mets, Mariners, Yankees and Red Sox from 1989-05. He played 2,234 career games with a lifetime .295 batting average and 255 home runs.

Located in Murray, Kentucky, the athletics department of Murray State University is a NCAA Division I member and plays in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Racers have 15 programs including men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, football and golf and women's teams for basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball, as well as a mixed gender rifle team. Currently a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Racers join the Missouri Valley Conference on July 1, 2022. The Racers will become a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2023.
