MSU falls to Illinois State, edges Youngstown State

In A Nutshell
The Murray State softball team opened play in its own 2023 Racer Classic Friday with a split at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers fell in the opener to Illinois State, 7-1, but bounced back in game two with a 2-1 win over Youngstown State.

Fast Facts

Murray State gave up five runs in the second inning against Illinois State, a deficit from which it was never able to recover.
Lily Fischer scored Murray State's lone run in the bottom of the second on an Illinois State error during Lindsey Carroll's at bat.
Erin Lackey doubled for Murray State to lead off the game in the first, however, that would be the Racers' only hit of the game.
In game two, Carroll once again scored Fischer, this time on a sacrifice fly in the second. The Racers tacked on an insurance run in the fourth on a single from Riley Jestadt that scored Gracie Osbron
Youngstown State scored in the fifth, but it was not enough as Murray State held on for the win.
Jenna Veber got the complete game win Friday by allowing no earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and only one walk.

Murray State wraps up action at the Racer Classic Saturday with Youngstown State at 12:30 and Illinois State at 3 p.m.
