Murray State baseball dominated at the plate and on the mound to earn 15-1 win over Southern Indiana

Murray State baseball put together its highest-scoring game since April of 2022 in a 15-1 mercy-rule win over Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon in Murray, Kentucky. While the Racers bats impressed, Jacob Pennington tossed a complete game shutout for his second consecutive complete game.

The MSU offense once again pieced together double-digit hits with 10 on the day, three of which came in the way of the home run. Seth Gardner got the home run party started with a three-run home run to right field in the second inning. Gardner would end the day with four RBIs to lead the way for Murray State. Riley Hawthorne showed off his power with a solo blast down the right-field line.

Cade Sammons showed off his speed around the bases with a two-run inside-the-park home run for his first home run this season. Sammons picked up three RBIs out of the leadoff spot for the Racers to go with two hits in the contest. Logan Bland also picked up three RBIs against the Screaming Eagles while scoring a run of his own.

Dustin Mercer, Brennan McCullough, Carson Garner, and Drew Vogel all picked up an RBI as eight different Racers drove in a run.

Pennington continued his dominance on the mound, with 7.0 innings pitched while giving up zero earned runs and striking out nine. The redshirt junior allowed just four hits to USI while issuing zero walks. Pennington now has a 2.53 ERA in 32.0 innings pitched this season with 30 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .144 against the right-handed pitcher as he has allowed just eight walks this season.

On Saturday, Murray State will honor their three seniors for Senior Day as Ben Krizen, McCullough, and Gardner will be celebrated. Festivities will begin at approximately 1:40 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
