10/3/2024 8:09:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Murray State looks ahead to its first MVC competition as reigning conference champions.
The Racers are slated to open up play at the Missouri Valley Conference Fall Individual Championships on Friday, October 4 at the XS Tennis and Education Foundation in Chicago, Illinois. The UIC Flames are the acting host for the fall championships over the weekend.
The tournament takes place October 4-6, and matches start at 9 a.m. CT each day. The tournament format features six singles flights and three doubles flights.
In last year's fall championships, the Racers took home five of the 10 possible championships out of 10 total flights. Senior Paola Campigotto aims to stay undefeated in the event, as she is the reigning back-to-back Singles Flight 7 Champion. Campigotto is also the reigning Doubles Flight 3 Champion, a title that she won with former teammate Emma Honore.
Sophomore Valeria Chaikovskaia holds overall top seed and is trying to remain undefeated this fall, currently holding a 6-0 record without dropping a single set. Sophomore Varya Alexeyeva is the only other Racer who has participated in the event. She went 1-2 last season competing in the Singles Flight 2 bracket with her two losses coming in hard fought three-set matches.
The winners of Flight 1 Singles & Doubles get an automatic bid to represent the Missouri Valley Conference in the ITA Conference Masters Championships that will take place in San Diego, California November 7-10.
All four semifinalists in the ITA Conference Masters event get an automatic bid to participate in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournament, which will take place at Baylor University in Waco, Texas November 19-24.
