Rebecca Widan signs with the Racers out of Cape Town, South Africa.
The Murray State women's tennis program made a new addition to its roster after signing Cape Town, South Africa native Rebecca Batya Widan. Widan is set to join the team in Spring 2025 following her high school graduation in December.
Widan arrives to Murray after rounding out her high school career at Reddam House Constantia, a private school in Cape Town. She was the third-ranked player in the South Africa junior rankings and a career-high 804th in the ITF World Junior Rankings.
"Rebecca is a great athlete and a fierce competitor with lots of national and international experience which will give us even more depth and options in our line up," head coach Jorge Caetano said. "From the moment Rebecca stepped on our campus on her visit I knew she would be a great fit for our program."
Widan most recently competed at the South Africa U-18 National Championships in June, finishing as a semifinalist in singles play. Since April 2023 she has won a doubles championship (August 2023), been a three-time singles semifinalist, three-time singles quarterfinalist, two-time doubles quarterfinalist and semifinalist, and was a doubles runner-up in July 2023 at J30 Nairobi, Kenya.
"She is extremely hardworking, well-spoken and a great student," Caetano added. "She hit it off with the girls fairly quickly which will definitely help her adapt to playing college team tennis and I can't wait to have her joining our team in January."
