The Racers dropped the first game of a two-game midweek series to Southern Indiana Tuesday night, 10-5, at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.

The Screaming Eagles took the early jump ahead in the first inning, scoring three runs on a two-run double followed up with an RBI single. Murray State answered back with two in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from Carson Garner and a Logan Bland RBI double.

USI responded with five more runs in the third inning on a two-run single, a two-run double and an RBI base hit. Garner and Bland scored a run each in the third and fourth innings on groundouts to draw the score to 8-4 going into the fifth inning.

Southern Indiana only scored two runs in the last six innings of the game on solo homers in the sixth and ninth innings. Taylor Howell blasted his ninth home run of the season to give the Racers their fifth run.

Howell recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season with a base hit in the eighth inning and extended his reached-base streak to 18 games. Garner extended his hitting streak to five games and reached-base streak to 19, as well as recording his ninth multi-hit game. Jonathan Hogart also recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season, with both players tied for the third-most games on the team.

Jacob Hustedde and Thomas Mcnabb each had efficient outings coming out the bullpen Tuesday night. Hustedde tossed two scoreless innings allowing two walks and fanning three batters. Mcnabb allowed just one run in 3 1/3 innings and recording a new season-high four strikeouts.

Murray State aims to split the series with USI on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m. CT on the USI Baseball Field in Evansville, Indiana.
