The senior tossed seven scoreless innings in Friday’s win over the Redbirds.
The Racers opened up Alumni Weekend with a 3-0 shutout over the Illinois State Redbirds on Friday at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky. The shutout win was just the second time this season that Murray State has held their opponent scoreless.
Murray State and Illinois State were scoreless the first three innings of the game before the Racers scored the only runs of the night in the fourth, starting when Taylor Howell struck the scoreboard first with his 13th home run of the season.
Ethan Krizen then ripped an RBI double off the left field wall to score Hawthorne, and Dustin Mercer capped off MSU's scoring with an RBI triple off the right-center field wall to score Krizen.
Cade Vernon earned his seventh win of the year after throwing seven scoreless innings allowing five hits, two walks and striking out a career-high nine batters. Nathan Holler earned his sixth save of the season, moving him into a tie for the eighth-most saves in a season in program history with Todd Fox (6, 1999).
The Racers play Illinois State for the second game of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
