Racers Get Run-Rule Victory At Home Over Skyhawks

Cade Brown earned his first win of the season with a career performance out of the bullpen.
The Racers secured a walk-off run-rule victory, 18-8 in seven innings, over the UT Martin Skyhawks on Wednesday at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
The Skyhawks started off Wednesday's game with five runs in the first inning, to which the Racers answered back with four of their own in the home half. Riley Hawthorne started Murray State's inning with a two-run home run for his first long ball of the season. Taylor Howell followed up with a two-run home run of his own for his 15th of the year.
UT Martin extended their lead to two runs in the second with a solo homer, but the Racers added another four runs in the home frame to gain a two-run lead going into the third inning. An RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 6-6 before Carson Garner gave MSU the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
An RBI single from Howell in the second followed by an RBI knock from Garner in the third to give Murray State a 9-6 lead.
The Racers added four more runs in the fifth on a Drew Vogel home run for his 15th of the year and a pair of RBI base hits from Jonathan Hogart and Howell to give MSU a seven-run advantage. The Skyhawks pushed across two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings before their scoring was capped by Murray State's bullpen.
Five runs came across the plate for the Racers in the seventh to secure the walk-off run-rule victory over UT Martin. Preston Shelton drove in a run on an RBI groundout which was followed by Dan Tauken scoring on a wild pitch. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks from Vogel and David Stokely and a walk-off RBI single from Parker Estes gave MSU the win.
Cade Brown earned his first win of the season and second of his Murray State career. The Cardiff, California native tossed three innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on two hits while punching out a career-high six strikeouts.
Howell recorded a four-hit day with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hawthorne and Vogel each drove in three RBIs and scored two runs. Hogart totaled a game-high four runs and John Orberson scored three runs. Vogel, Hawthorne, Garner and Rudd also scored a pair of runs.
Hawthorne extended his reached-base streak to 21 games, which is tied with Hogart for the second-longest streak by a Racer this season. Howell picked up his first four-hit performance of the season and his 11th multi-hit game. Howell also leads the team with multiple-RBI games with 17. Garner and Hawthorne both extended their hit streaks to five games, currently leading the team.
Murray State hits the road for a conference matchup with Missouri State May 3-5 at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri. First pitches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT, 2 p.m. CT and 1 p.m. CT.
