Wright Era Begins as Racers Fall to 11th Ranked Mizzou

Muray State dropped the first game of the year to defending Cotton Bowl champion Missouri
The Tigers would score on their first drive on a 16-yard pass after the Racers attempted an onside kick but were unsuccessful. Mizzou would again score on a short field after MSU attempted a fourth down run but did not reach the line to gain and the Tigers punched in a nine-yard rush to make it 14-0. The Racers defense would gather themselves to limit the Missouri offense to a lone touchdown in the second quarter. Kevon Haigler recovered a fumble to cause the Tigers first turnover of the season.
Game Notes
- Jayden Johannsen, CJ Barnes, James Camden, and Kylan Galbreath served as the captains for the Racers in the season-opener.
- The Racers caused one turnover in the matchup recovered by Kevon Haigler.
- Amari Wansley led the team with 10 tackles as Tyson Meiguez and Kavan Reed each had five tackles.
- Reed impressed with a pass break up and a tackle for loss in the performance
- 62,621 were in attendance in Columbia as the Racers and Tigers played in front of a sold-out crowd.
- Freshman Australian punter Thomas O'Hara punted eight times in his American Football Debut
- O'Hara averaged 43.9 yards per punt with three punts landing inside the Mizzou 20 yard line
- Jordan Washington became the first true freshman to start at running back for the Racers since 2017
- The game was Jody Wright's first as a head coach after being named Murray State's 20th head football coach in January
- Murray State will return to the confines of Roy Stewart Stadium next week (Sept. 7) to host Butler
- The game between the Racers and Bulldogs will be the first meeting between the two programs
