Racers Look to Stay Hot at SIUE Cougar Classic

ÂMurray State Volleyball (3-3) will compete in the SIUE Cougar Classic in Edwardsville, Ill. on September 13 and 14. Â
ÂThe Navy & Gold are coming off of an undefeated weekend at the Elon Phoenix Classic that saw Ella Vogel be named Tournament MVP with Federica Nuccio and Bailey DeMier making the All-Tournament team. Vogel is second in the MVC in kills, averaging 4.57 per set for a total of 105. DeMier is currently third in the MVC in assists with an average of 9.58 per set and a total of 230, Nuccio leads the team with 10 service aces and preseason All-MVC nominee Darci Metzger is second on the team in kills with 65.
ÂThe Racers will look to extend their three-game winning streak in their first matchup with the Knights of Bellarmine (1-5). The Knights are looking to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping matches against IU Indy and Cincinnati. The Knights are led by sophomore Natalie Bland, who has recorded 77 kills on the season along with 46 digs. She tallied a season-high 18 kills in the Knights' season opener against Lindenwood and had 17 in their lone win over UAB.Â
ÂFollowing their matchup with the Knights, the Racers will face the hosting SIUE Cougars (1-5). The Cougars opened their season with a win over Eastern Michigan, but are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Sydney Hummert leads the team in points and kills with 89 points and 72 kills. Defensive specialist Olivia Hogan leads the team with 69 digs and Taya Nordmann has 30 blocks. Â
ÂThe Racers will play their final contest of the weekend on Saturday against the Chattanooga Mocs (6-2). The Mocs are coming off a loss to Jacksonville State, however before that they won six consecutive games. Due to that hot start, Elaine Redman and Kynil Kirkendoll were named SoCON Setter of the Week and Player of the Week. Redman is averaging 10.03 assists per set for a total of 331 on the season while Kirkendoll recorded 15 blocks and 29 kills in the Mocs' three games at the Chattanooga Classic. Â
