The Murray State Racers fell to the Valparaiso Beacons 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at ARC Arena in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The Racers (3-14, 1-7 MVC) remain at the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference standings following the loss, while the surging Beacons (16-5, 7-1 MVC) are in second after winning five straight.
The Racers jumped on top early in the opening set, storming out to a 5-1 lead and holding on to win 25-22 in a first set that saw Valparaiso commit 12 attack errors. The Beacons bounced back in the second set, improving their hitting percentage from .127 to .333 and winning 25-17. The third set saw the Beacons take a 25-19 win and a decisive 2-1 lead. The Racers hung around throughout a competitive fourth set; however, they were unable to take control late as the Beacons took a 25-22 win to clinch the match.
Lily Burnett led the Racers with a season-high 15 kills, while Ella Vogel and Haidi Miliou had nine each. Paige Brock led the team with 20 assists, while Katie Titus added 19 more. Freshman libero Samantha Nelson tallied 14 digs to lead the Racers. Morgan McClure had eight blocks, while Alex Watts recorded four and added eight kills.
The Beacons were led by Sam Warren with 22 kills. Addy Kois had 32 assists, and Emma Hickey led the way with 23 digs.
Murray State returns to historic Racer Arena for a pair of home MVC matches. The Racers will face the Bradley Braves on Friday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. CT and the Evansville Aces on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. CT. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
