Racer Overpower Aces in Thrilling Five-Set Win

Murray State picks up its second MVC win over Evansville.
The Murray State Racers defeated the Evansville Purple Aces 3-2 in a Saturday evening Missouri Valley Conference match in Murray, Kentucky.
The Racers improve to 4-15 and 2-8 in the MVC with the win, while the Purple Aces fall to 6-16 and 2-8 in the MVC. The two teams are at the bottom of the MVC standings and a game behind Illinois State.
The Racers came out of the gates hot, dominating the first set and hitting .405 on their way to a 25-15 win to open the match. Evansville answered in the second, pulling away to win 25-20, bolstered by a .467 hitting percentage and 15 kills.
The Aces continued their success in the third set, winning 25-19 and putting up 19 kills, the highest total of the match for either team. Murray State responded yet again in the fourth set, winning 25-18 in a set that saw Alexa Watts tally four kills to force a fifth set.
The Racers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the fifth set before the Aces knotted it up 8-8 later in the set. The teams battled back and forth until the Racers pulled away again with a 5-1 run. Senior Federica Nuccio electrified the crowd as she ended the match with her fifth ace of the evening, sealing the 15-11 set win.
In addition to her five aces, Nuccio put up a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs on the evening. Ella Vogel led the Racers with 19 kills, and Haidi Miliou added nine with seven blocks. The Racers' dynamic setting duo of Paige Brock and Katie Titus continued to put up big numbers, as Brock tallied 30 assists and Titus added 21. Freshman libero Samantha Nelson led the Racers with 21 digs.
The Purple Aces were led by Josdarilee Caraballo and Brooke Herdes with 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Lexi Owens put up 45 assists, and Ainoah Cruz added 23 digs.
Next week, the Racers are on the road in the state of Illinois. They face the Illinois State Redbirds at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in Normal, Ill., before traveling to Peoria to face the Bradley Braves at 5 p.m.
