Racers Strong Start not Enough to Overcome Bruins

Murray State loses 3-1 to Belmont
The Murray State Racers fell to the Belmont Bruins 3-1 in a Missouri Valley Conference match on Thursday night at Racer Arena in Murray, Kentucky.Â
The Racers (4-20, 2-13 MVC) remain 11th in MVC standings while the Bruins (17-9, 8-7 MVC) improve to fifth after the win. Â
The Navy and Gold opened the match with a strong first set, hitting .300 with 12 kills and taking the first set 25-17. The Bruins answered in the second by surviving a hot start by the Racers and surviving to take the second set 25-20. Belmont replicated its success in the third, coming back from an early deficit to win the third set 25-20 and take 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, the Bruins jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before the Racer got back in front 6-4. Belmont jumped back in front and didn't look back, clinching the match with a 25-14 set win. Â
Ella Vogel cemented herself at fifth in career kills in Murray State history, putting up 10 kills on the evening to set her career total at 1286. Haidi Miliou led the team with 12 kills and Alexa Watts added nine. Freshman Elita Foti led the team with a career-high 18 assists and put up a career-high 10 digs for a double double. Katie Titus added another 16 assists while Federica Nuccio led the team with 14 digs. Â
Three Bruins tallied double digit kills as Brooke Gilleland had 17, Brenna Kauffeld had 16, and Emily Warmenhoven had 13.  Jordan Czajkowski totaled 40 assists while Lily Lutz had 14 digs. Â
The Racers will conclude their regular season with a home match against the UNI Panthers on Friday, November 14. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT with senior day festivities taking place during pregame. Â
