Murray State lost game one 7-1 and won game two 7-5.
The Murray State Racers (3-3, 0-0 MVC) split a Friday doubleheader at the Skyhawk Invitational with the Western Michigan Broncos (3-6, 0-0 MAC), losing the first contest 7-1 and winning the second 7-5.Â
ÂGame One:
Game one started out as a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to put a run on the board through the first four innings. Kenley Minor broke the stalemate in the fifth, scoring on an error to make it 1-0. Â
ÂThe Racers entered the final inning leading 1-0, however the Broncos came up big, putting up seven runs. Murray State was unable to answer and the Broncos came away with a 7-1 win. Â
ÂPayton Kelly and Caitlin Tighe led the Broncos with two hits each while Tighe led the team with two RBI. Five other Broncos recorded hits. Jensen Gremillion went the distance and was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.
ÂFor the Racers, Kenley Minor, Katy Huels, Ailey Schyck, and Parker Holcombe all recorded hits and Erin Lackey was responsible for the lone RBI. Bre Haislip was saddled with the loss despite striking out five batters.
ÂGame Two:
The Racers' offense turned the page going into the second game and came out hot in the first inning. Kenley Minor walked in the opening at-bat and stole second and third before fellow freshman Katy Huels sent her home with her first career home run to make it 2-0. Â
ÂThe Broncos added a run in the first and the second, however the Racers responded with a three-spot in the third. Erin Lackey started the scoring by reaching home on a throwing error, and Kayleigh White kept it going with a two-RBI single to left center that gave the Navy & Gold a 5-2 lead. Â
ÂWestern Michigan added another run in the fourth but the Racers responded yet again in the fifth. First Katy Huels put up an unearned run on a dropped fly and Ailey Schyck added another off of a play where Ava Ozment was thrown out but was credited with the RBI. After the Broncos added one more, the Racer led 7-4 going into the sixth inning.Â
ÂThe Broncos opened the final inning with a Jordan Smith solo home run to left field, making it 7-5. The Broncos put two runners in scoring position with two outs, however Bre Haislip was able to draw a ground out from Micaela Booth to secure the victory.Â
ÂKaty Huels led the team in hits with two and had two RBI, Kayleigh White had two RBI with one hit, and Ava Ozment added one RBI as well. Parker Holcombe also added a hit for the Racers.Â
ÂKayleigh White was the winning pitcher for the Racers, striking out two and giving up two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Bre Haislip was credited with the save after pitching the final inning. Â
ÂMurray State is back in action as the host of the Velvet Milkman Classic, from February 12-23. They will kick off the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. CT matchup with Western Illinois on Friday, February 21.
