Racers Unable to Win on First Day of Velvet Milkman Classic

Murray State fell to Butler and Western Illinois.

The Murray State Racers (3-5, 0-0 MVC) fell to Butler (7-1, 0-0 Big East) 4-2 and Western Illinois (3-7, 0-0 OVC) 4-3 in a pair of Sunday afternoon games in Murray, Ky.

Butler came out hot in the opening game, putting up a pair of runs in the first, however, the Racers responded in the second. Ailey Schyck sent her third home run of the season over the center field wall to make the game 2-1 going into the third.

The Bulldogs struck back in the third with a two-run shot of their own, courtesy of Ella White to make it 4-1. The Racers continued to chip away as Kenley Minor added a run of her own in the third.

The Navy & Gold had opportunities in the remaining innings, putting runners in scoring position multiple times, but neither team was able to add another run, making the final score 4-2.

Katie Petran went the distance and was the winning pitcher, collecting eight strikeouts in seven innings. Hailey Conger led the Bulldogs with two hits while Ella White led the way with three RBI.

Raylee Roby took the loss for the Racers, allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Bre Haislip had seven strikeouts in relief. Ava Ozment led the team with two hits while Katy Huels and AIley Schyck added an RBI each.

The second contest of the afternoon saw the Leathernecks jump out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first and one more in both the third and fourth.

The Racers finally broke through in the fifth inning as Bailey Broemmer recorded her first home run of the season to make it 4-1. In the following inning, Erin Lackey scored two with a single to right-center to cut the deficit to just one.

The Racers were unable to tie the game in the seventh, making the final score 4-3.

Lillie Wools pitched all seven innings and collected the win while Kayleigh White was saddled with the loss for the Racers.

Erin Lacket led all hitters with two RBI and Parker Holcome, Katy Huels, Ava Ozment, Bailey Broemmer, Kayleigh White, and Taylor Franzer all recorded hits as well. Malia Robertson and Maria Luna each had three hits for the Bulldogs.

The Racers will finish their Velvet Milkman Classic Schedule on Monday, February 24, and face Western Illinois at 12:30 P.M. CT and Butler at 3 P.M. CT. Western Illinois and Butler will face off at 10 a.m. CT.
