Racers Split Monday Matchups at Velvet Milkman Classic

Murray State defeated Western Illinois and fell to Butler.
The Murray State Racers (4-6, 0-0 MVC) defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks (3-9, 0-0 OVC) and fell to the Butler Bulldogs (9-1, 0-0 Big East) in a pair of Monday afternoon games in Murray, Ky.
The Racers defeated the Leathernecks 9-0 in their first game of the day, and came out hot in the first inning, putting up four runs. Erin Lackey got things going with a two-RBI double to left center, and Bailey Broemmer followed up with a two-RBI double of her own.Â
The Navy & Gold added three more runs in the third. Ailey Schyck opened things up with her fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to center field. Bailey Broemmer added one more, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.
Courtney Sandy added a run in the fourth by scoring on an errant Leatherneck throw, and Bailey Broemmer sent Erin Lacked home with an RBI double to right field to push the lead to 9-0.
The Leathernecks were unable to add a run in the fifth, handing the Racers the win. Â
Bre Hailsip pitched all five innings, picking up the win and striking out two while only giving up one hit. Bailey Broemmer was the leading hitter for the Racers, going 2-2 with three RBI. Erin Lackey and Ailey Schyck added a pair of RBI each and Parker Holcombe put up a pair of hits. Katy Huels, Ava Ozment, Lackey, Schyck, and KAyleign White each recorded hits as well.
The Racers' matchup with Butler started out slowly, with neither team putting up a run in the first inning. The Bulldogs broke the tie in the second when Olivia Moxley scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. Â
The Bulldogs added two more in the third with Ella White hitting an RBI double to center field and Paige Dorsett hitting an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0. Â
The Racers were unable to add a run for the remained of the game, despite putting a runner in scoring position twice.Â
Gwen Baker pitched all seven innings and was the winning pitcher, striking out six and giving up three hits. Bre Haislip took the loss after giving up two earned run.Â
Kenley Minor, Ava Ozment, and Erin Lackey each recorded hits for the Racers.Â
The Racers are back in action February 28 through March 2 at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, Miss. They will open tournament play with a 10:30 a.m. CT game against Nicholls.    Â
