Murray State splits opening-day contests.

The Murray State Racers fell 3-2 to the South Alabama Jaguars on Friday night at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Alabama.

The contest started out quietly as neither team was able to plate a run in the first and second innings. However, the Jags opened the scoring in the third with a two-run homer by Gabby Stagner.

South Alabama added another in the fourth as Megan Davidson scored on a ground out to the shortstop by Caitlyn Gavin. The Racers struck right back in the bottom of the inning as an RBI double by Ailey Schyck sent Rylee Webb home, making it 3-1.

That score held throughout the fifth and sixth as the Racers entered the seventh needing two runs to stay alive. Emerson McKinnis delivered a one-out single to keep them alive before Courtney Sandy was subbed in as a pinch runner. Sandy advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a Kenley Minor single through the left side to cut the deficit to just one. However, the rally wasn't enough as the Racers were unable to add another run.

Olivia Cato was credited with the win for the Jaguars after pitching four innings and striking out five while giving up one earned run. Ryley Harrison got the save, striking out three and allowing one run in three innings.

Karlye Graber was the losing pitcher, giving up two earned runs and walking three in 2.1 innings of work. Alyson Smith relieved Graber and pitched 3.2 innings striking out one, walking two, and giving up one earned run.

Kenley Minor, Erin Lackey, Rylee Webb, Bailey Broemmer, Ailey Schyck, and Emerson McKinnins all recorded hits with Minor and Schyck each posting one RBI.

The Racers will finish out the South Alabama Invitational on Saturday, February 8. They will face off against UAB at 9 a.m. CT and play their second game of the weekend against Northwestern State at 11:30 a.m. CT.
