Racers Fall 6-4 To Govs in Battle of the Border Match Play

The Racers took on Austin Peay in the fourth annual competition in Hopkinsville, Ky.

The Murray State Racers men's golf team fell 6-4 to the Austin Peay Governors in the fourth annual Battle of the Border Match Play in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on Saturday.

The Racers were one putt late in the day from tying the match 5-5, but dropped the annual clash that featured 10 head-to-head matches.

In the first event of the spring, the Racers' four singles victories came from Trey Lewis, Jakob Wellman, Tyler Wirth and Rocco Zakutney.

"It is a tough pill to swallow to fall just short on a match that was tight all day," said MSU Coach Jacob Miller. "We were one putt from squaring the match on the 18th green. However, our guys competed at a high level today and took a step in the right direction heading as we get into our spring season."

The spring season for the Racers features five events leading up to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship (April 20-22) in Des Moines, Iowa at Des Moines Country Club. MSU finishes February at the Gulf Coast Collegiate (24-25) in New Orleans, Louisiana at English Turn Golf Club. The month of March finds the Racers in St. Simons Island, Georgia (13-15) at the People's Golf Championship at St. Simons Island Resort and the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate Match Play (24-26) in Pittsburg, Tennessee. MSU travels to Bloomington (April 5-6) for the Hoosier Collegiate at the PFAU Course and Starkville, Mississippi (April 14-15) at Old Waverly Golf Club to play the Old Waverly Collegiate.
