Racers Fall to Bruins in MVC Opener

Murray State was unable to break through at Belmont, falling 3-0.
The Murray State Racers (8-12, 0-1 MVC) fell to the Belmont Bruins (17-7, 1-0 MVC) 3-0 in their Missouri Valley Conference opener in Nashville, Tenn Wednesday afternoon.
The Bruins put up runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings including a fourth-inning solo home run from Brenna Blume.  Blume also recorded an RBI on a first-inning single before being thrown out as she tried to advance to second. Nicole Hughes was responsible for the only other run, scoring Rylee Spindler on an RBI double
The Racers had four hits on the afternoon and had a chance with Parker Holcombe in scoring position in the top of the sixth.  However, the Racers were unable to reach home all day. 
The Bruins benefitted from a season-high 17 strikeouts from pitcher Maya Johnson, who is now second in the nation with 123 on the season.   Johnson's record improves to 9-1 and her season ERA is now 0.73.  
Bre Haislip (3-6) started the game and took the loss for the Racers after allowing two earned runs and striking out two in four and two-thirds innings.  Karlye Graber pitched one and one-third innings in relief, allowing no hits, no runs, and collecting a pair of strikeouts.  
Parker Holcombe led the team with two hits while Kenley Minor and Bailey Broemmer each had one.  
The Racers will return home Friday, March 14 for their opening MVC series against Bradley.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
