Try & Try Again! Kimutai Sets MSU 3K Steeplchase Record

The Racers competed in St. Louis at the WashU Distance Carnival
The 2025 outdoor season keeps bringing the Murray State Racers record-breaking performances as Ruth Kimutai broke the 16-year old MSU 3000M Steeplechase mark at the WashU Distance Carnival at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis with a time of 10:51.54.
Â
A year ago, Kimutai came close to the record, but fell short by a little more than 6-tenths of a second.
Â
In 2025 with a better approach and maybe a little wiser, Kimutai, a senior from Eldoret, Kenya, broke the Murray State record of 10:51.72, set by Kaitlyn Jones in 2009.
Â
"Ruth missed the record by less than a second at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships last year, so we put a plan together of some indoor goals in both the mile and 5k that we thought were necessary stepping stones towards the steeple record," said Murray State assistant coach Jordan Johnston. "Ruth achieved both goals indoor and so I knew she was in a very good place going into this race and I couldn't be prouder of the athlete she has become in these last four years."
Â
Kimutai now owns two of the top three all-time Steeplechase records in Murray State history.
Â
The Racers continue competition Friday at WashU.
