Racers Split Day One of Racer Classic

Murray State defeated Akron and lost to Cleveland State.
The Murray State Racers (7-10) defeated the Akron Zips (10-11) 9-2 and fell to the Cleveland State Vikings (5-10) 7-3 on day one of the Racer Classic in Murray, Kentucky.Â
The Racers' first game of the day got off to a quiet start, with neither team being able to notch a run for the first two innings. The Racers started to heat up in the third, scoring four runs. The scoring got started with a Katy Huels RBI double, and Ava Ozment kept it going by scoring two on a bunt. Courtney Sandy scored the final run of the inning off of a sacrifice from Bailey Broemmer. Â
Murray State added two more in the fifth as Erin Lackey scored on a single by Ailey Schyck before Schyck went home via an RBI double from Taylor Franzen to give the Racers a 6-0 lead.Â
Akron finally broke through in the sixth as Megan Lee scored on a Sydney Selker sacrifice fly. Alexis Campbell followed that up with a single through the left side that scored Lily Sullivan and cut the lead to 6-2.Â
The Navy & Gold responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Parker Holcombe started the scoring by reaching home on a throw after advancing to third on a fielder's choice from Erin Lackey. Bailey Broemmer added another pair of runs with a two-RBI double to center field. Â
The Zips were unable to score in the final inning, giving the Racers a 9-2 win.Â
Bre Haislip 2-5 got the win in the circle, going the distance and only allowing two earned runs. Madie Jamrog was the losing pitcher for the Zips.Â
Ailey Schyck led the team with three hits while Katy Huels, Kenley Minor, and Erin Lackey had two each. Parker Holcombe, Ava Ozment, Bailey Broemmer, Taylor Franzen, and Rylee Webb also recorded hits. Broemmer led the team with three RBI.Â
Cleveland State opened up their matchup with the Racers by scoring two in the first inning. They added four more in the third, with three coming on a bases-clearing triple by Peyton Mueller Stenz that gave the Vikings a 6-0 lead.Â
The Racers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Kenley Minor recorded two RBI on a double to deep left center and then scored on an errant throw during the next at-bat to cut the deficit to 6-3. Â
The Vikings added one more run in the fourth on a bunt RBI single by Melissa Holzopfel. Both teams had chances with runners on base in the closing innings however none reached home, giving the Vikings a 7-3 win.Â
Avery Robinson was the winning pitcher for the Vikings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three in three innings of work. Payton Mueller Stenz led the team with three RBI while Melissa Holzopfel and Emma Gilkerson added two RBI each.
Raylee Roby (2-2) was the losing pitcher, giving up six earned runs in two innings. Kenley Minor led the Racers with two RBI and Taylor Franzen led the team in hits with three. Katy Huels, Minor, Ava Ozment, and Erin Lackey all recorded hits.    Â
